So after Warley hits the basket on 9 costing me a dollar, Will steps up and hits an Ace costing me another $5. He even used the Magic that I gave him to steal my money. Then I have to write about it too, but whatever.

Great shot, Will. Was a slow one for sure! Well, after telling Sean that I wasn't going to pay him a dollar on a basket hit during our 4 or 5 hole warmup time (not sure the protocol there) Will, was playing a round (I believe) with Fuzzy and Christina (who we joined) and hits an ace on the same hole and I felt bad about not paying Will the $51 so I hesitantly but happily did it. I'm sure there's a thread on PDGA about this but I'm too lazy and have no intention of hunting it down. I recently was playing a few holes with Fuzzy and some others and I was like picking up and stuff and I disqualified myself from accepting any $51 because of that but I suppose we now have a GTDG precedent here where if you are on a card with someone who aces (even for a few warmup holes), whether you join them or they join you, then the $$$ gets paid out. Correct?

To be honest i dont think there is a "rule". No one is obligated to pay anything in 51. I dont think anyone is going to break anyone elses legs over it. The spirit of 51 is that if you see an ace/basket hit then you pay it if they are in. Whether you are on their card or not doesnt really matter but in the end it is up to you if you want to pay or not.
For me personally I dont pay for practice aces and i usually pay for a basket hit if someone isnt on my card and i see it and ill usually pay up a dollar to a basket hit for soemone on my card if they arent in 51. I dont think I have ever paid for an ace that wasnt on my card (unless we all decided to do 51 before the round) and i wouldnt offer to pay up for an ace from someone who wasnt in 51.

Everyone has a different interpretation but this is how I interpret it. To me it is what is the honorable thing to do (honor seems very unpopular these days). I wouldn't expect you to pay me if we said we were going throw a couple of holes before league and I hit an ace; but you joined them playing a round of golf and you witnessed an ace - I say pay up. To me the difference is - are you practicing (taking multiple shots) or playing (keeping score)? Like I said, there is some "grey area" just do the right thing.

In the case of yesterday, Neal was not "obligated" to pay up but he did. Neal is also a special case (not in a bad way this time lol). Neal has always been straight up about when and what he will pay off on and also makes it clear to others when he is not in on 51.
Yesterday Neal and Sean joined us on #7 just so they could practice a few holes before league. We knew and they knew they were not playing a whole round or keeping score. Well Sean hit the basket on 9 so I paid up and I beleive Neal and sean had already said to each other that they were just practicing and werent doing the 51 thing. Which is fine. Im gonna pay up anytime someone on my card hits cause that is just the way i do it (or atleast an IOU lol). Well by me paying up I think I prompted Christina and Will to pay up also. (not to say they werent going to on their own anyway.) Then Will hits the ace right after that and Neal was unsure if he should pay but I think was made to feel "obligated" since we all paid off Sean prior to that. I think he did the honorable thing. He paid up to someone who was in a real round and was on the card.

Well thank you guys for the dough and the sigs. I wouldn't ever pressure someone to pay in whether they've played the entire round with me or just jumped on, but I appreciate everyone being a sport. I just started using that damn putter and I have to hang it up already.

And yeah we were playing a round. We were in a heated battle, #1 vs #38. The ace helped but in the end I couldn't catch up to him, and he beat me by 1 or 2 strokes. The ace used up ALL my luck for the day.
