Tommy and myself made the drive over at 5:30 am and got there early enough to play half the course and get the road rust off. We were lucky enough to play our practice round with Tony Bender ( TBender) and he showed us the layout.

The format was 1 round from the long tees and the round 2 from the short. Honestly long and short were relative, they were different tee boxes but that did not mean long and short. Just different places. The weather was great for round 1, alittle hot but not as bad as it has been the last few weeks. I believe there were 16 or 17 in the INT. After round 1, Tommy stood alone in first with a 50 (-4) from the longs. I was in a tie for 8th with a 57 (+3) one spot out of the payout. The lunch break was a fairly long one, near an hour and a half. Luckily for those who havent been over there yet, there is a Burger King right across the street.

During the lunch break they had a very cool Ace Throw for a bag full of discs. It was open to anyone that wanted to throw for $1 a throw unlimited throws. 3 Houston players hit the ace then at the end had to throw a CTP elimination for the bag.

Round 2 was an experience i will not soon forget, even tho i will try. In the near distance we could see the clouds building. They sent us out to our location and you just knew the water was fixing to be falling from the sky. It did right as the start playing horn sounded. A wall of water swept across the course , no one excaped from getting wet. My card was the chasing card and started hole 12. The lead card included Tommy were on hole 10. We all made our first throws and were making it down the fairway when the first lightning bolt hit. We waited on the Stop play horn but it did not come. I noticed that the lead card did not start. I believe they were the smartest of us all. Another bolt struck and still no horn. Our group made our second shots and marked them when the Third bolt hit and then the Clear the course horn sounded. We had close to a 30 minute wait and when all was said and done, since the lead card did not start and 1 card finished a hole, they were all given 1 stroke. It is a rule that was enforced. It gave life to the chasing card since they wereatleast 6 strokes behind the leader ( tommy) . It cleared up and we restarted. Tommy quickly retrieved the stroke he lost by birdying hole 10. We got about 4 holes into the round when the rains began yet again. This time there was no lightning but monsoon rains. I have not personally played in the rain with the New plastics and even tho i had 3 towels, there was not a dry spot on any of them. No excuses for poor play but the weather had a major effect on my round. Discs slipping from my hands before i let them go. My mistake ( besides letting the weather get in my head) was not keeping enough old school discs in my bag. I would strongly advise that from now on. Don't get me wrong, I had a blast and my playing partners were great. Jon Parmely, John "GIMP" Edwards and Tony Bender.

Tommy on the other hand was on FIRE!!!!!!!!! He did not let the stroke penalty effect him at all. He told them he was fine with the stroke penalty, a rule is a rule, but said he was going to go out and shoot a -8 anyways. Believe in the prediction. The Putting Machine was in full working order. He was crushing drives with his KC Aviar ( nice sticky gripping disc) and KC Whippet that he just bought that day. He went out and backed up his prediction and shot a 46 (-8) just as he said he was going to do. He held off second place Chris Flesner by 1 stroke, Chris started the round in 3rd or 4th and actually shot a -9 but came up short. This day belonged to GTDiscGolfs Tommy Winfrey. His first win in a PDGA sanctioned event in a very long time and dare i say not his last. His score <without the="" penalty="" stroke=""> would have tied him for the lead in the advanced and would have tied him for 2nd in the OPEN. The crazy thing is he was not feeling well all day. great shooting!

As for me, i made it my mission to keep the guys on my card informed on how the card they were chasing were doing. I used the round to try new things once the rains stopped. When they stopped it got pretty damed hot and humid. Playing with Tony and Gimp gave me some ideas for shots to try. when the rain stopped i shot decent, but not good enough to undo the rain time and finished with a +10 on the shorts. Not proud of it but i know that next time the shorts are mine and i know i need to be better prepared for everything that may happen. As far as the guys on my card. They all moved up and caught some that were on the lead card. Congrats to my new compadres. I honestly do not know who won in the open yet but the Advanced was won by Matt "The Kid" Hall yet again. What a phenom he is at 14.

After all was said and done, It was a great event and i cant wait until the next one. Big thanks go out to Kimhak Pech and Louis Hall for running a great event.
