have they mowed recently? Scott said that He didn't get bit by any bugs while out there recently, Just trying to get the info up to date on the course conditions for the 2 courses.

Any time something changes with grass or bugs either post here on the boards, or submit news and i can update that stuff.

The grass is not very high. They mowed the course about 1 1/2 weeks ago i think. It should be a couple of weeks before it really needs to be cut.

Yes it is true, I did not get bit at all(nor did i even see a skeet) while out there earlier today. Once the sun started to go down I did have a couple of those annoying deer flies hanging around me though.

Since the trees have all filled in the course is playing really tight. We moved hole #7 to the long pin and I think pretty soon we are going to move #1 to its alt pin(very tough on the alt). I think everyone has agreed that #6 is more fun on the A pin so i think we are going to move it back soon.

If anyone has any suggestions on the pin placements let me know.

we should get out there with a metal detector and a shovel and find the other pin placements, I remember from back in the day where most of them should be.

Well we have the placements for 1,2,3,5,6,7,8,9,and 14.

I'm thinking about digging up 8 and 2 and using those for other alts that we can't find since those 2 are just bad alternates.

4 isn't very important to me because i doubt the alt would be as good as the reg. I feel the same way about 10,11,12 ,15 and 18.

That leaves 13,16 and 17. We could use the sleeves for 8 and 2 on two of those and maybe we could find the other one. If not it would only cost a couple of bucks to make a sleeve.

Of course I say all this but I don't know where alot of those alts are so it might only make sence to have to move certain ones at the same time as to not cause fairways to run to close.

Nice and rainy afternoon of DG. We got to hole #8 when the bottom fell out. That said , there were 11 players out braving the conditions.

Saturday was a great day of DG. Lots of people on the Island today. I counted 20 players all playing while I was there this afternoon. And that was Missing a few groups of regulars. Action on the Island is heating up. I am very close to Finalizing a night/Time and course for a weekly Mini so if you have not voted on the Poll at the front page Then please do. This will determine a night.

Hot and steamy this afternoon. ( 12:30-2:00pm) The grass is getting pretty high on some holes but it has been alot worse. Bugs were surprisingly low, like no mosquitos or deer flies buzzing today. Thanks to the massive rain on friday, The pond on #2 and the puddle on #4 are full again and the Pond on #14 is up behind the tree again. Water hazards are great, just ask scott. lol

Ransom: we only get so many mows per mont/summer. It is a $$$ thing for the PI commision. Gas cost plus man hour. The maintence director told me if we start getting rain the grass is going to grow faster which means the rough is going to be high for quite awhile between mows. We are due for a mow but rain is forcasted everyday this week so I donno . Believe me. we want it dry when they mow or it will do no good. Wet grass just lays down under they're mower . I will talk with reed and see what they're schedule is .

Tomwin
06-14-2003, 08:09 AM
When you talk to him ask him if they have some sort of schedule in advance when they plan on mowing. If so try and snag the dates from him so we can put them on the calendar as tenative grass mowing dates. If not, it's not a big deal we can just have people submit news on the update course conditions topic. Ransom actually did that for the mosquito bite which was pretty cool. That's why it's there though so we dont necessarily have to go to the course every day to see how things are going. Other people who go out there should be able to submit the news

yeah, over the last two weeks the grass has gone from very low cut to pretty high... sportznut, who is the maintance director? and how do i get in touch with him? i have several legit questions of him about the island, and not just about the course.

just got in. cruised out by the course. the wind was kicking up at a fairly good clip, but despite this, those damn skeeters managed to stay in giant swarms and thwart my putting efforts. i had to make the joke about how i didn't ace the second hole again because the clouds of skeeters knocked my disc of target... lol. i don't see it getting much better untill the rains go away and the course dries out. although this might take a while, SE Texas ground having such sponge like qualities... on the bright side, if the wind picks up enough to actually blow the mosquitos away, you'll have a nice challenging game with large water traps. only thing that would make it better is if the water traps had 3lbs.+ bass

Ok, you've heard the last ill word from me about the PI commision's schedule on grass cutting for a little while. i know you're all saddened by this, but hey... as of this minute, the grass is being cut! i was just out there and they had two or maybe three brush hogs out there whacking it down like a five iron. seemed like i saw some guys moving targets to alternate pin locations, although i'm probably wrong about that. wind was moderate with several high gusts, mosquitos were NILL, and i had a pretty good putting session at the #2 target. if the weather holds fairly well, i'll be there saturday and sunday, hope to see you all there.

We went and played today and about half of the course ( the outer half ) is mowed. The mosquitoes are not very bad at all considering all of the rain we have had. It seems like the pi commission is doing a good job fighting the bugs. In the trees of hole 11, 12 and 13 they are bad as normal and under the tree area of hole 1 they are mild, other than that you will be wading through high grass all of the round rather than swatting mosquitoes

Ransom

yep, i was there today too. played one round through about four o'clock. i was greatly impressed with lack of mosquitos, except as you said, 11-13. didn't actually get bit by a single skeet today, got bit by a really big deer fly though, it didn't get a chance to make that mistake again. my buddy jordan got a good birdie today. within three feet of the dirt patch on hole six.

Grass has been freshly mowed, not lowest it has ever been but it's mowed.

Thanks to DJ107 for the update.

Played the island today. I would say the grass is medium to high, they really did a horrible job mowing this time. No skeets at all though!

side note: there were zero bugs at tyrrell the other day also.

Unbeleiveable day today out at the Island!! We played in 25 mph winds with 45-55 mph gusts!!! I actually had a putt on 9 for birdy from about 10 feet out and ended up shooting from 80 ft out for par(which i missed and bogied)!!!! I would be here all night if i tried to describe all the "interesting" shots I saw so i will leave it to ya'lls imaginations.

With all that wind, those crazy skeets still managed to complelty suck all of my blood!! I haven't seen the skeeters that bad all year, if ever! I don't know how they get through that wind but somehow they must have felt that the tropical storm was gonna get them, so they decided to go out with a full stomach!!

P.S. I managed to shoot a 57 which I was EXTREMELY happy with! Probably one of the best rounds of DG for me all year considering the conditions.

anyone go out there this weekend? I am curious whether the grass has grown to medium or even high since the last web update. With the rain I bet it will be at least medium maybe even high by wednesday so i'm going to bump it up to medium for now.

fuzzy
08-11-2003, 03:05 PM
Medium is about right. Most of the course the grass is burned and dead from the heat so that still plays like short grass. But the front part of the course is mostly medium height. I would guess that after this rain it will get real high real fast. Still no skeeters.

The course was freshly mowed on Monday. They did another excellent job on mowing this time. Bugs are their but not too bad.

If anyone sees the mowing crew out there please let them know what an outstanding job they have been doing!

I wish we could get a good mowing crew at BASS

Sportznut
08-28-2003, 06:25 PM
but see engeeee.. Pleasure Island is a 2 YEs 2 time host of the Pro Worlds . So they give us a mow regularly. lol When Tom Bass hosts they're 2nd, things will change....... Problly not.... we are just lucky that they have to keep the grass cut so they keep the mosquitos under control.

Is that right Rambo?

I think it is that fact that we have lazy people working maintnence at Bass and that they ride around on those gators all day long. If they spent half the time on a mower as they do on a gator, the grass at Bass would be mowed daily!

matchu
08-29-2003, 02:06 PM
they need a bush hog or whatever on the back of them gators.

Big thanks! to the crew out at the island for filling in some of the major ankle breaking holes out there!

I can't remember what all holes were filled but the one by 11's basket and 14's teebox are filled.

Jimmy Dikes of the Pleasure Island commission has been very receptive to are needs, so if there are other improvement planned we might want to keep the commision in mind.
