Hurricane Rita
Is coming! Our site has the possiblity to be down for a while, we are transferring the data to a different location and the dns stuff may be screwed up for a few days worst case.
Everyone do the smart thing and evacuate while you can. Even if it doesn't hit us (I sure hope it doesn't) You are better off leaving.
Tomorrow's the 1'st Annual Hurricane Rita Bag Tag Challenge...... probably around 12:00, call round to see whos gonna make it. Call me at 860-9874

Beaumont is 38-50 feet above sea level, depending on where you are. Unless you're worried about the flooding from the rain, which happens every year in SOME fasion, from SOME storm or other, then there's nothing to fear.Carla hit in 1961 as a category 5 with winds in excess of 150mph, and you know where people in the area evacuated to? Beaumont. If you're in a low lying area, that's different, but here? psh. You can wait it out in your house, or you can wait it out on the highway like all the panicked people did in 92 when Andrew rolled through.

I am up in Lewisville north of dallas with Leanne's family, my folks are in austin with my sister and her husband's family. Robert is safe in Crockett with his wife's family so everyone really that i know are out of town.
If you know where people are at and have internet access post here. I heard David Vance on KFDM tv on the radio as we were evacuating saying that he was headed to Nachadoches (or however you spell it)
The site is back up we moved the data to a different location the other day in case it hit corpus.

I am in Lewisville also.
Cant get a hold to Dustin but last time i talked to him he was almost to Jasper headed to Toleda. Ray Maosn and Scot Wosniak were in Arkansas last i heard. Matt is in Conroe and is trying to get back into town, probably as i am typing this.
Jon James stayed through it. I have been getting some updates from him and they sound better then what I thought but still not great. Has hasnt seen any houses down but trees are everywhere and carports etc and scatter all over. He mentioned something about all awnings and stuff like on Sonic wheer on the ground etc. He cant get around town to well because of the authorities closing off roads. In his words "The militia is everywhere".
Bottomline is we all still have homes just probably no shingles and mabey a broen window or two for some.
I will post if I hear anything back form Jon or my uncle (he is part of the emergency crew)
Stay safe.

Jarred, me, my brother and my parents are staying with 2 of my sisters in Arlington. It took us 17 hrs. to get here from Bmt. Took US 96 N. Many, many hours of standstill traffic, 1mph,2mph, etc... We are concerned about our homes, however, we have gotten to play some disc golf.
Played the Vet in Arlington yesterday and played a tournament today at Bear Creek park in Grapevine, just north of Arlington. What a beautiful course. Got a lot of wind the 2nd round. Will report scores at a later time but I will say that we played from long tees the first round and the short tees the 2nd round. I took several and I mean several strokes off my Rd. 1 score. Who said 13 was an unlucky number!? An ace was hit also. Just not by me. Fuzzy give me a call at(817) 683-9739 and we'll meet up for some disc golf at Z-boaz or one of the many other courses.

Anyone who stayed or is back now, do a drive by if you get a chance. I am going to try and head back mon. if I get my answering machine to pick up. I talked to John earlier today and he said that my house is fine. I am missing a few shingles, none of my windows broke either.
However, my 100 yr old oak tree is laying across the middle of my back yard and the dirt from the root system is sticking up about 4 feet above my 6 foot fence.
The tree in my front yard had all of the branches broke off of it also. My house is in good shape though which really eases my mind.

Got a report on my house. All our trees are still standing, my uncle didnt see any windows broke and the cars are fine. The bad part is while we didnt lose a tree our neighbor did and it is now sitting on top of my house. :( Didnt appear to be any severe structural damage from it , hope that is the case when we get to lok closer. Oh yeah the boat is on the side of the house the tree fell on and didnt really get an answer whether it is messed up.
Dustin is now back at home in Bmt. He said nothing is realy wrong with his house.
Everyone i talk to has a report form someone that thier houses are structurally entact. SO we all have our homes which is rockin!

This course is a straight-up water hazard folks!! I lost my white first-run 175 orc on hole # 11!! BOo HOo!! Water runs throughout the 21 hole course. Maybe 6 of the holes don't have water! Anyway I'm safe and my wife and I have a extendedstay room reserved in Austin Tx. from this thursday on into the first thursday of October!! Oh and I will be playin all the Austin courses!! I'll try to get access to a computer in Austin and post about my discgolf vacation!!LOL Everyone keep their heads up, and I hope to see ya at a southeast Tx. dg course soon!! Hey, Danny. Now that's what I'm talkin' about. A disc golf holiday. Tonight I played in a Wed. night mini at Veterans Park in Arlington. I took 2nd place in Advanced (6 players) with a -2 (only 15 holes played) short tees. They don't pay Ams cash in payout so I had to cash in on some plastic. $6 worth. Hey, Danny you outta play in the Oktoberfest in Red Rock this weekend which is close to where you'll be staying. I'm going up on Friday afternoon and am gonna stay the weekend. It's a B tier and I hear the course is awesome. My wife is sending me a pic of house. We left so much meat and stuff in our fridge. Anyone else do that? Hundreds and thousands of people did. I hear you have to get a new refridgerator and that insurance may cover it.

Well,we Stayed through the whole shebang. It was scary as hell, but still nowhere NEAR as devestating as predicted, at least around here, which is evidenced by the abandonment of the national media the VERY next day, when they realized that 20' of water that was going to flood us didn't exist. We got 3-5" of rain. The sidewalks here stayed clean and dry. This is at King's Gate Apts on Major, about a block south of Klein. Unfortunately, even though the rest of the apartments here have cable and Roadrunner up, Time Warner STILL hasn't hooked our building up yet, in spite of their assurances that they'd NEVER do something like that. I guess we're just lying to them. So, dialup it is for now.
I have played Klein every day for the past week now, at differeng times. Me and my buddy Jeff Parish were out a few days ago cleaning up Klein(we've cleared a little more each time we go out, but this particular time...), making as many holes playable as possible with his sugar cane machete, and we hadthe pleasure of meeting Tim, DG, and another guy, I didn't catch his name(sorry) but he had, Jones I think, tatooed on his shoulders. They were out taking pics of the place. To DG and the other guy, I netted out my lost SE TieDye Leopard from the ditch on hole 6, and I ALSO netted out a brand new looking X-OUt Polaris belonging to someone named Bobo, whose phone number was not working. If anyone knows Bobo, let me know so I can get his newly deodarized Blue Polaris back to him. My leopard did not deodarize so well. just a couple days in that ditch and it smelled like a petting zoo. I've toned it down to the point that it now smells like a box of bandaids. Oh well it still flies.
But me and jeff have been playing Klein on the current extreme difficulty setting, skipping NO holes lol! Scores have not been pretty, but it's been fun as hell, and a very short term opportunity. So, anywhere you see flight paths cut through branches like Disc frenzied beavers have been around, or tee pads cleared and swept fairly clean, that was us :D Personally, I like hole 4 better the way is is right now! We cleared it enough to play, but there is a definite branch hazard around the basket.
The only hole we really couldn't help is, I think 14? The one with the three huge trees down across the fairway? There's only so much two busy guys with a machete can do. DG advised us to not even PLAY that hole the other day, but we're gluttons for punishment! You can't play em all cept ONE. I gotta say, it's ugly out there, but it is a LOT of fun with the extra obstacles.
We're out there pretty often lately, so if there is anything we can do, any spots you want chopped in the meantime, before the "pros" get in there to clean the place up, lemme know, and I'll be glad to try. Also, if anyone knows Bobo, lemme know about that too, before I get too fond of his Polaris!

Sup guys, Bear Creek up here in Dallas, or Euless rather, is a pretty sweet course. Fairly wooded and fairly short. One par 4 and the rest par 3's. I took my brother out for his first round ever and he shot a 16+. I thought that was pretty good, I shot terribly, 7+, probobly cause I was giving Daric pointers instead of focussing on my game. I had 3 birdies and 2 doubles, not sure of the pars and bogeys. I did hit a 100ft. birdie put which was pretty sweet. I think im going back out to hit up some of the other courses here in big D. catch ya later.

I went up to Flower Mound and played LL Woods and shot a 2-. Thats my best round ever. Pretty Sweet. ;) Then I went up to Lewisville Park right by the Lewisville Lake. That is an awesome course. Hole #3 is a forearm hyser shot off the tee that flies over the shore of Lewisville Lake. Beautiful! :-o I shot two rounds, 5+ and 2+. Needless to say I had a great day of DG, I hope to make it to that private course in Huntsville on the way back to Beaumont, if I can find it. Catch ya later dudes.

James, I have no idea what comments you are referring to other than my comment about your putting which was a joke. Yet, true. Do you go around and take inventory or something? I do not live my life for you guys or to say things to please you. I am me and don't need yours or anyone elses friendship who has a problem with me. Along the same lines, however, I make sure not to offend anyone and I'm the first to try to right any wrongs. I'd be curious to know of other instances of where I've said or done something wrong. Well, there was that one time I did tip Danny over. And there was that one time I told Kenny he was doing falling putts. There was one or two times John and I butted heads. All better friends because of it! That's the way it is supposed to work. Grudges don't sit well with me. Forgive and forget, I say. Jealousy will cause people to go around hating. I've known these guys for longer than you have and we all have fun playing disc golf. Well we used to anyway. Now no courses, really. I know you are trying to reach my level :-D so if saying things that you think are hurtful or to make me somehow reflect on how more people could like me more then go right ahead. It's in real bad taste to mess with someone when their getting their life back together.

Klein is going to survive. We played yesterday through the destruction. You have to be a trooper to play under those conditions. We will need to plant some trees for the future though. Even though there are a lot of trees down, the course survived. No damage to any baskets. If you play, watch out for #4, trees fell all around the basket (it plays really cool!) with a limb guarding the approach. Tyrrell will be the next course I take a look at and play. I will post the day and time when I get the chance to play so we can get a group to play. I had fun yesterday and look forward to playing Klein again before its cleaned up.

Chessguy, no, Jeff is a bit younger than that, and went to school here in Beaumont.
El-Jefe, when we cleared out 4, we purposely left the one limb sticking out in front there for a bit of a challenge. I've had more fun playing through these obstacles, honestly, than I ever did before, even if my score is usually pretty bad as a result(as in, "losing" count) Klein has gotten better now that the Bog of Eternal Stench has died down. I fished my Arrow out of the water on hole 6(they're supposed to just die when they land, but if they land vertical, they roll forever ;) and it almost smelled like fresh water. There's only two holes really at klein that are REALLY pushing it to play through, I think 13 and 14, but I'm not sure on the numbers really. The one with the picnic table near the tee pad and three huge trees down across the fairway, and the one right before it which was bad anyway before because of the jungle you had to go through.
I went to Pleasure Island yesterday(sorry Fuzzy, didn't get your second message till we came back, and I dunno if you were up for going that far anyway) and had a great time playing there. I'd say it's more like 30% of the trees down there, but important ones, no doubt. The hole 12 basket is MIA after searching for damnnear 45 minutes with a sugar cane machete through another Bog of Eternal Stench, and a few huge downed trees. If they replant, I hope to god they don't replant Tallow trees. They ain't good for nothing cept holding soil together. We did a little bit of clearing there too, but nothing on the scale of our work on Klein.
I'm about ready to get out and see Tyrell too, I just hope this rain doesn't completely flood the place, otherwise I'm gonna need some taller boots.

Oh yeah, when ya'll play klein, on hole 4, watch for the dead possum stench, and be careful climbing to the basket. We only left sturdy branches, but they still flex a bit, and you could twist your ankle very easily, even impale yourself in one spot. So be careful.

PLayed Klein testerday and shot like ass on the front 9(lost disc penalty carded me a 6 on #4 ) but managed to pull back to a lousy score but better then I was after #6 ugh.
When we drove through PI last week my assesment of 70% ish of trees down was for trees that were actually in play before.
My second trip thru TP was better then the first. The first time i drove thru it was really hard to see anything that didnt look like it was on the ground but the second time around after they had done some clearing it seemed slightly better but still a freakin wreck.
No matter how you look at it though PI is trashed and so is TP and theyll need some serious work. Klein after cleared shouldnt be all too terrible but could use some tweaks.

Chessguy, look dude, I think the problem is that you don't realize when you say things you shouldn't say. Like, for instance, when you called my birdie putt a disaster. You stloe my thunder when I was just happy to make the putt in the first place. You say that you don't say things like that and that you don't boast when in reality you do both of those things often, especially boasting. I think you need to realize that everybody goes out to the course to have a good time and shoot a good round, what they don't want is to have somebody dogging their game or constantly talkin about how good they are or how many aces they have. We all know your a good player, you don't have to tell us. LET YOUR GAME SPEAK FOR ITSELF!!! Now, I don't want you to think that I don't like you or that I have a grudge against you because I don't. I think you're a good guy, you just have a problem with letting your mouth run without considering how your statement makes you look or especially how it makes the person you're talking about look. I hope that you do care if you say something that offends somebody because if not then you're not a good guy. I never did anything to upset you, in fact, I have defended you to some of the guys before. Your intentions are good but it doesn't come out the right way. Just do me a favor and give it a try. Try to consider what you say and try to figure out if it could be offensive. Thats what this is all about. I think we could be cool friends if you can oprn your mind to this, and probobly even if you don't we'll be cool. Just remember that if you don't care at all that's fine, just don't talk shit to me or around me because I don't appreciate it and neither does anybody else. Peace be with you. :?:

So what's the recourse here guys? Wait for them to finish(or start, in the case of Klein) cleaning up the places and then rework the courses, throwing up poles creating new mandatories, doglegs and such? Or maybe just move the baskets around again?
After playing the disaster version of Klein, I honestly think there's only a few holes that are going to be seriously affected. PI is DEFINITELY messed up, but not destroyed, again, save for a few holes. I have yet to see Tyrell, but with the way it floods there normally, and the number of trees there, I am painting a grim picture in my imagination. Just, you know, keep optomistic about all this crap guys, with a little sweat and some ideas, we may end up with courses that play better than before.
I'm ready to help any way I can in the manual labour department, already been trying to what small extent I'm able, so whenever you guys are ready to get something going.
Fuzzy, if it's not too wet, I might try playing Klein tomorrow sometime, and if I do, I'll dig around till I find your disc. It'll be a hell of a lot easier than skimming through the stagnant mosquito nest of a ditch for 3 days to find my Leopard. If it's buried in the carcass of the dead possum back there though...

You need to take a good hard look at what I've done positive for our disc golf club, etc... instead of focusing on one comment that rubbed you the wrong way that we've already hashed out and you deem it necessary to slander me publicly on this board. Now that is wrong!!! You are letting jealousy get the best of you, James. Can we end this for now until we get our damn lives back together and until I can at least get a piece of B-day cake or some coffee or something. Hell yeah, I smacked 8 aces in my first year of active playing and I'm damn proud of it!!!

To answer your first question of , do we wait til the city clears the course, the short answer is yes we wait. We are not allowed to use any power tools out at PI for sure. This was made clear to me years ago by the Island commision. So out there besides a little harmless cut here and there maybe we should not go out with a crew and start clearing it out, unless of course we do it with non-power tools. in which case you guys have fun....lol I would imagine do to insurance reasons TP and Klein have the same policy about power tools but I do not know that for sure.
I am a pretty evil man with lots of creative ideas when it comes to course design and artificial hazards and the like. We should have no prob setting up something fun and challenging as long as we have the materials to do so. I am always up for the challenge of making evil holes that tend to make some players say "Holy shit what was he thinking, but I love it" (ie #4 Klein,#13 Klein, the 937 footer at TP etc) I also know there is a cast of characters out here that have plenty of ideas brewing in their evil skulls.
To throw a couple out there:
Elevated baskets. We can use the cut up trunks of the fallen trees to make a small circle wall around a basket. We just dig a trench in a circle and half way bury the cut trunks in the dug circle. Take the dirt we dig out for it and fill in the circle and insert the basket in that. Could use an old tire filled with concrete around the basket sleeve and then fill over with dirt.
Wooden fences. We can protect baskets with wooden fences. I dont think anyone will argue that there is plenty of lumber around nowadays to do this for free. Would probably be best to remove everyother board as to allow poeple to be able to see beyond the fence but doesnt allow a disc to fit through.
Mandos. This can be done with trees that are still there to force certain routes. Also we could install tall poles where needed.
More Ob territory. We can make more things OB. Currently, the way things are supposed to be played, most everything you think could be OB actually is (even though i see alot of poeple not doing so)so adding more things is probably unlikely. At TP though we dont play over the ditch as OB, maybe we should start. At PI we dont play in the sticks as OB, maybe we should start.
That is a starter list, please everyone, pile on your ideas if you got them.

We will get together soon to make the courses playable again. If you see some fence poles by the side of the road, GRAB them!!!!!! We can drive them in the ground and flag them as mandos. Any thing will work. The stumps left from the trees that have fallen will make it easy to elevate some of the holes. We can also plant sawgrass and other trees and bushes that will grow quickly to finish out the course. Give the city some time and we will be able to get back in there and take care of everything. My biggest fear is damage to baskets during the clean up. Pray thay look out for that stuff. Maybe I'll grab my chain saw and cut out around the baskets before the clean up begins so they won't be in the way.

Jeff. Chainsaw, did you say chainsaw? Forget the jerk comment and come on over and help me out with this one tree I have in my backyard that needs cut into pieces. I've never used one; I'm afraid I'd slice my leg.

how big a tree are you talking about? PM me with your address and I can get it chopped up into small enough pieces for you to carry out. I'll cut, you carry. Deal?

We only have one tree in our yard. It is about 18 in. in diameter and about 18 or 20 ft. long. I'd like to actually leave a couple of stump "seats" in the back yard to sit on. I was thinking about the best way to transfer the pieces to the front curb and thought that I'd maybe roll them on a sheet and wrap it up and just pull or roll the big pieces. I no longer have PM priviledges. My pastor was gonna help me but he's busy with assisting others in our church family with repairs, etc... Let's at least wait until it dries up a bit. I was amazed to hear that people were playing the courses. I did play Klein the first time I saw it after Rita and was real careful to clear the debris. Your offer is greatly appreciated and will thrill my wife! Do I understand correct that there are different strength chainsaws or something. Some smaller ones may get bogged down in large trees? Wow, Jeff. You're not a bad guy after all! :-D

there are different quality chainsaws with different size bars. I have an el cheapo but I let mine cool off every 20 to 30 min of work. It has done a great job. I have cut through trees 25" in diameter ( it takes a while so you don't burn up the motor or chain). I can cut the tree up into small enough pieces to carry or put in a wheelbarrow to haul off.

Well, the entire fence here at King's Gate Apts, block down major from Klein, is down, and today they are chopping it up and just throwing the stuff away. If anyone has a way to take this lumber out and store it, they'll probably just let you cart it off as you will. I'd claim it myself, but at the moment, I have no way of storing it... I mean I'm living here AT the apartments. Pretty high fences too, with long posts. Gimme a call at 833-2207 if someone wants to come get some of this stuff, and if you promise me you're not a cat burglar in you free time  I'll give you the gate access code to get in, since they have turned the gates back on. What good they do without a fence, I have no idea...

Chessguy, it was cool playing with you today although you took my #5 tag for your #7. Considering the obsticals we faced I think we played pretty well. About our argument, you keep saying that I'm jealous. I have no idea what you're talking about. You have nothing for me to be jealous about. You obviously think I'm alot more serious about this than I am. I simply wanted you to consider that your mouth runs away from you sometimes. I didn't mean for it to sound hateful. And the fact that you said that nothing I said was true is denial. And, the fact that you are 29 does not mean that you can't reverse any flaws in your personality. I really was just trying to help, but thats all I'll say and if it has no effect then oh well. As you could tell today we can be cool, but just try to think about what I said with an open mind, it's not too late. You probobly don't care anyway. About reparing the courses, I love working hard. This weekend if anyone wants to go work at Klein I'm gonna bring an axe and a hatchet and at least try to open up the tee boxes with limbs on them. Maybe I'll try to clear some other stuff as well. That way we'll have a little more sanity there so we can practice a little for Texas State. I know alot of the guys are rusty. Call me at (409)330-1739 if you want to help maybe Sat. and definetly Sun.

I'd be down for helping out Sunday at least, if not both days. I think Saturday I might get to go to the firing range though. SUnday for sure though, whenever you get a time set to head out there, I'll be there with my machete and my discs. Probably some water too.
Also, Jeff, or anyone else who wants some of these fence posts, they're just sitting around here, a lot of them are loaded up into the giant temporary dumpsters, but still very accesible from the bed of a truck or whatever. But really, living here, I can't do anything with them myself. I've got nowhere to put them and no way to cart them out anywhere, and if I drag them somewhere else here at the apts. they'll just get dragged back to the pile. Still, lots and lots of posts and sections of fence, tall stuff, just being thrown away...

James, yes, I enjoyed our game yesterday also. I made 38 yesterday. 29? I wish. James, at this point, let's continue this discussion if need be "off " the site, please. It's getting old and it's no fun having my character questioned in a public forum.

The Pleasure Island Commision has already started clearing the fallen trees and debris. I went by yesterday afternoon and all of it was in piles and they were removing some of it. They should probably be finished today but don't even think about playing there - the mosquitos will eat you alive! But my sign survived!! :o
I'm going to try to make it out to Bmt. this weekend to play!

Roy, can you put in a call to Jimmy and see what limitations we may have on what we can do to improve the course? Also maybe see what they could possibly help us with? Would be nice to know what we can and cannot do for now and for the future.

Nah, the mosquitos at PI weren't bad at all when i played sunday. They were NOTHING compared to the ones around the basket on hole 3 at Klein for a week after the storm. They've died down a LOT recently, but are still bad along the road in the back 9. The ANTS, on the other hand, are running WILD at both courses. I got to meet Danny and Kenny today at klein and played a round with them, and met Jeff on hole 15 when he was through chopping up the cage that was surrounding #4 basket, and SOMEWHERE around the #4 teepad, ants decided to set up a small fort in my bag, which I didn't realize untill we were walking toward the dogleg into the woods there, whereupon they swarmed up my right arm and down onto my legs.
Did you know that ants communicate through pheremone signals? Interestingly, this allows them to conduct coordinated strikes. I tell you, there is NOTHING like being stung by 15 SETX fireants all in the exact same instant.

I'll give him a call next week and post what he says, but i'm sure he is really busy this week, as I am. Although, I am definately opposed to moving baskets, maybe tee boxes or planting trees - something along those lines.

I was thinking more on the lines of maybe construsting a disc blocker fence or two, planting trees, shrubs, sawgrasss and maybe mando poles. Was also thinking making a built up green (i described this in an earlier post, probably on another thread ). I just dont know if we would be allowed to do any of these things.
I do not want to move any baskets or even teeboxes for that matter BUT somehting has to be done to like #6,11-12-13 , possibly 15 and possibly 9 since after clearing they probably arent even DG holes anymore.
I say we move all the hills from pleasure island to another park so that we can use them
