what are the chances of the tournament going on in port arthur in february like last year?
I know the course is damaged and it might be hard to say at this point in time, but if the tourney is going on I kind of need to plan in advance.

The tourney is on Feb.11th. No hurricane can stop that :)

PI made it through rita pretty well. We lost a lot of trees in the far back but other than that the course plays the same. From what I can tell its improved scores by a stroke or 2. We as a club are planning this one with gimp and will include some press releases for the tourney. We are hoping for a large turn out. See ya there!

Are we going to be doing the "Sponsor a hole" thing before or after the tourney?
I would personally like to see it happen soon after the tourney, so that people who don't play there very often will still be familiar with it. besides, it'll give us a little more time to get them sponsored and re-arranged in time for the next tourneys/minis going on. just my humble opinion.

Not much change since I have only played a couple of tournies. I think i am sitting at 917 but I have not even been playing to that level since I broke my ankle. Under par seems like a thing of the past for me now, maybe one day it will all click again, but if not oh well :)

ransom, The adopt the basket does not mean you get to move the basket or teepad, It means you get to fix that hole up, ie mulch or gravel under the the basket, if you get a tire sponsor you can use stacks of tires as an obstical, you can bring out your lawn mower an mow a short grass area for the fairway, you can put sponsor banners along the fairway or on the teebox, etc...... The course will not be physically changed as far as placement. I was thinking of getting the yacht club to sponsor a hole and putting a hobie cat on the course on hole 6? with the main sail raised to replace the tree that is gone. Stuff like that. Be creative, but all designs must be ok'd by the pres. the course rep and possibly the pi commish.

Hey, Keith. You playing Bear Creek in Grapevine on Jan. 7? It's a very nice course if you haven't played it yet. I'll see ya out at the course where I will give you lessons. Not a disc golf lesson; a lesson on how to walk on aching feet. OUCH!!!

I'm going out to the island Friday around 12:30 if anyone wants to play.
Me, Fuzzy, and Matt mapped out what we think will be the new PI course. We were able to keep many of the holes the same but had to change the middle of the course because of the damage Rita did and the plans the Corps of Engineers have for hole 12. We are going to have a work day some time next week to move some baskets and tee signs. I will post a date and time soon.

Mostly walking; glass walking, coal walking, grape smashing, etc... but I do know what I'm fixin' to have to use one of them for if you don't hurry up and run a night mini. :-D I would not wish even a mild case of achilles tendonitis on you. Were those your shades hanging up today on the board at Klein? I thought I saw you pull up around 4:20 today.

I didnt want to start a new thread for this since it is not set in stone. Once the layout is finalized and put into place there will be a front page story on the changes. For now I will give you the run down of what we came up with today.
Before I do that let me explain something:
The island lost alot of trees as well as possibly losing #12 teebox area. #12 was trashed by Rita and there is hardly anything you can do about it. With that you run into a serious flow problem, becasue once you finish #11 you have no where to go, major problem. #6 lost its trees which destroyed that hole, while this seems minor it totally disrupts everything trying to fix it when you couple it with the fact that we need a place to add another hole. There has always been a danger hazard with #8 tee being pretty much in #7 fairway and also #9 tee being in #8 fairway, these things are also major backup areas come tournament time. #14 is the most logical area to add another hole in since it consumed more land on the course then anything lese out there (whenyou think about it that hole eats up ALOT of land. All these things considered this is what we came up with to best take care of all the issues:
#1- Same…possibly move tee box approx. 20 ft. to the left, fill the current box and let settle for awhile then move back.
#2 Same…. Possibly move basket back 20 ft to bring OB into play. If this is done there is a possibility of filling in the current basket placement and moving it back once settled. Also would like to move the tee over a few feet and fill to allow the box to settle.
#3 Same shot. Possibly move the tee up 30 feet to get out of rocks. Move basket back approx. 20 ft.The downside(or maybe it is an upside) is that the hyzer route becomes very hard to the point that it is probably not worth trying.
#4 Same. Possibly move the tee over about 50 ft to the left. The hole becomes a straight shot same distance. This will keep people from throwing the newly more open anhyzer route that comes too close to #3 basket.
#5 Changed. Possibly move tee back to be safe from the flood area. The basket will now be shorter. Basket located 20ft short and 50ft left of the b-pin location. Basket sits on the down slope and surrounded by trees making for some tough putts.
#6 Regular B-pin location. Possibly move the pin over to the right a bit to bring the tree located about 60 from the tee more into play.
#7 Changed. Tee located near #14 short cypress tree and pond. This hole will play to current #8 basket. Approx. 240 feet. Straight shot very risky to run at and of course as always, very scary to putt at.
#8 Changed. Walk back down toward current 9 tee from current #8 basket. Before you get off the hill will be the tee. Basket will be located close to where short current #7 placement is but slightly further. You can annie or hyzer around the tree next to current #8 tee box.
#9 Changed. Will tee from about mid-fairway of current #9 and play to current #9 long pin. Straight thru the tunnel or annie around or overhand over the top if you got the D for that.
#10 Changed. Will tee from about 30 ft in front of current #10 tee and play to current #11 basket. Possibly move the basket over to the right and closer to current #12 tee box to make for a longer and more of a two shot hole.
#11 Changed. The tee box will be locate about 1/3 of the way down current #12 fairway near the side cable. From there your shot will cut across current #11 fairway and the basket will be located in the group of trees to the left of current #13 tee box.
#12 Changed. From current #13 tee walk up 30 feet and to the right about 60 feet to the tee. Short putter type straight shot. The basket is located on the side of the hill where current #13 basket is. The basket is blind over a hill from the tee.
#13 Changed. From current #14 tee walk partially down the hill directly right toward the sticks. There is a row of trees about 20 off the marsh line, that line of trees and the marsh sticks make the borders of this straight very tight downhill shot. Fairly short hole but extremely tight. This hole will undoubtedly get the most criticism. It is VERY hard no matter if it is only roughly 260ft and downhill. Holes like this exist ALL over the country so it is about time we in the GT have at least ONE :-)
#14 Changed. Tee box will be located next to the tree in the center of current #14 fairway. Basically tee off from where second shots normally land. Plays to current #5 long basket around the corner of the marsh.
#15 Changed. Tee off on top of the hill on the flat part down from #5 short pin location. Basically from where long arms land on current #5. Plays to current #15 basket. Possibly putting the basket back about 20 ft to add distance and to bring OB line more into play.
#16 No change. Possibly move the tee box over to the left to better ground.
#17 and #18 No change.
We spent many hours going over each and every possibility numerous times. We did lose some distance out there but that is what happens when you lose some previously playable areas. IMO we did add some difficulty to the course. If I had to guess then I would say the course likely would play about as hard as it was pre-Rita and definatly harder then post-Rita. All and all I think everyone will be very happy with the changes. We shall see :-)

Sounds freakin' awesome. Any plans on when this may take place? When is this? Feb. 11. Oh, no. Fuzzy's gonna be playin' Intermediate again and probably kick everyone's arse. Not this time! This one just may be be my last Intermediate tournament. I would like to win Poison Ivy Open, MacGregor or PI Classic. Wishful thinkin'. Doubt I'll be under 915 come States. I didn't realize how popular of a tournament the Poison Ivy Open is. Gets nearly 100 golfers!
I'll have my basket packed up in case we need it for a round at the Island tomorrow. Fuzzy, I'll call you around 11 a.m. Will got you your Firebird back I found? :-)
Also, I'd be happy to use one of my TB Strokesavers for the tournament but will probably yank it shortly after. Just wanted to give ya'll the heads up on that.

Just to be clear, what I just described is for the permanant layout. Due to dredging and the new levees, come tourney time it could be a whole new ballgame. No telling what the corp may screw up.
I dont think Ill be winning anything anytime soon. As far as playing INT at PI, I dont think so. Regardless of how ive been playing and the injury i had, I have been there and done that. Dont think you can beat the entire feild at a tournament and then play Intermediate the next time around. (yes that was bragging, but it's unfortunatly my only claim to fame...hehe) :-P Well i could but I'd never hear the end of that...lol

Just find it funny that the inept corps of aggies on pleasure island plan a levee system to contain that spoil. They should have to build a levee along the entire south side of the course to contain the spoil all the way down. Good job, by the way guys. Undoubtedly, it is difficult to try & redesign a hurricane trashed course & then start over again because of a bunch of dumbass monkeys aka Army Corps of Engineers. I'm sure it will be great for the tourney. I just wish I were there to help y'all out getting it fixed up.

Man, the layout sounds cool if it stays that way. The downhill shot with the tight fairway sounds like a real pisser! I like the idea of the baskets on the hill slopes, I always thought that the hills at PI were underutilized.

I was curious if there were many women planning on playing the tournament feb. 11th? My wife is planning on participating and she was curious. I noticed there was only one womens recreational player last year.

There aren't any women players from this area but you could ask Gimp, the guy running the tourney, if he knows of any coming from Houston or try the Houston Flying Disc website. I think he uses the username "Gimp" on both.
Either way, we welcome you both!

does anyone know if there will be a port-a-potty placed out there for the tournament?
alternatively, does anyone know if the restrooms by the campground are operational?
AveSatani
02-05-2006, 08:29 AM
There will not be a Port-o-potty. There are two restrooms - one at the playground near the campgrounds (usually fairly clean and not too far) and one at the big wooden playground (on the right when you get off the bridge - you can't miss it) I will check to see if they are both functional today.
***edit*** the one by the campgrounds works.
