Friday, December 30th at 10:00 a.m. we will be starting the removal of baskets, sleeves, and tee signs for the new design. If you can come out and help us, it will be much appreciated. After the completion we will try to play a round. Later we will print new tee signs to correlate to the new hole designs.
As painful as it is to see the PI course changed after having the World Championships there twice and being designed by a great course designer, I recognize that it must be changed because of circumstances beyond our control. We will try to make a course that is challenging to all levels, and has a good flow of movement for tourneys, and that uses all aspects of the landscape.

Sounds great. At first, I thought you were talking about Klein. Just a reminder about digging up the hole bases; water works great to loosen up the hard dirt. I found that out the hard way. I'll be there to help out. Some of those teeboxes need serious attention.

That totally BLOWS! That is the course i have played more rounds on then any other in the world! But since i probably wont play very many rounds anymore, it is selfish to want to keep the course the way it was designed.. i guess.. Unless this change was brought about by the construction efforts on the backside of the course.

Sportznut, it is a combination of what may possibly happen becasue of the construction of the levees and what Rita did. Because of the loss of twelve and needing some extra land we did have to do a couple of other things which led to a couple more things....lol All in all the changes arent all that drastic and if Roy is part of the change process and is happy with things then damn near anyone should be okay with it seeing as he seemed to be one of the biggest supporters of keeping the course the way it has always been.
Personally I like change and if it was solely up to me I would redo the entire course. I just think technology has made the place a bit too easy as well as Rita messing stuff up. The land could be used better imo. But thats just me.
i like the course and think it will be great whatever is done
I just hope that the new holes will try to use the hills available to the max possible
I'll be taking my parents fishing on that day, but maybe I can go "fishing" at the island and swing on by.

OK, I am just not for Change for the sake of changing, especially on That particular course.... That is all i am saying. If it was good enough to bring the World Championships here, 2 years in a row.. then it is good enough for local disc golfers to hack around on...
But i know about the construction eforts on 12 and knew something was going to have to change. I just didnt realize that it was going to be a course wide change......

I think the changes made are good for the course. I don't think they "change" the difficulty of the course and still use some of the same holes. I think the new layout out will work out fine. Congrats go to fuzzy and roy for putting together a good layout.
Sportznut, I hope to see you out and playing the course. you will find that the course has many of the same holes, and that the "new" holes flow with the old and have a lot of the same feel as the old layout. The change is not all that drastic but with all the trees in the back that are missing and the levee work being done the change will work out for the best.

Well some things are only slightly changed while alot is not touched at all really. Holes 1-2-3-4 are unchanged. #5 is not much diff then the reg. short pin. Rita killed #6 so we moved to the b-pin. #9 tee moved up some and basket back on the long. #10 is the exact same drive but you just go onto #11 basket. #14 is half of old #14 but play to long #5 basket. #16-17-18 no change.

The course got messed up pretty good by the storm, and with the way the corp of engineers are cutting a road in the back no telling what they are going to do.
It sucks that the course will be changing at all though because even though you say the technology has changed and made the course easier than it was intended to play, people still aren't consistantly shooting ken climo world championship 150 class (scorpion, whippet, viper, roc, aviar, stingray) scores out there. So in my opinion the course is still a solid design that isn't really any easier than it was in 91 when it was installed.
There isn't anyway you could plant some trees to fix the problems that Rita has caused?

Well you say no one shoots Climo scores but you have to take into account that there is only so well you can do on a course and take into account that no one that ever plays here is even scratching the surface of Climo ability even on their best day, this includes guys like Hague and Hall. I mean no matter what technology does(well maybe 100 years from now) no one is going to consistantly birdy hole #5 or #14 or #3(well maybe #3), just not gonna happen, but I have no doubt in my mind if you were to bring the top guys out now that a whole lot more of them would be shooting double digits under par. At worlds not a single person ever shot better then -7 if my memory of the old scorecards is correct, besides Climo. That means at the level I played last year at the GCCS I would have been able to hang with the top ten, if not top 5, players at worlds 94-95...that would not now or ever happen in my lifetime.
BTW, i am not lobbying to change the whole course. I was just stating that there are reasons for change beyond Rita and the corp and if i had it my way i would redo the whole park

As far as planting trees goes. I guess that could be done, of course that would likely have to be a commision handled thing. I could possibly invision planting trees and then down the road puting the course back like it originally was. With what I said about technology passing the course by and the fact that a whole different set of players will likely be handling things around here, i dont see the original coming back ever. Thats just my opinion I could be wrong.

like i said, I know about the need to move things because of #12's problem.... I just dont think thatstaring over would be the way to go. I know you said its not starting over.. But i heard the change talk when we ran leagues out there.. that was Pre Rita...

Let me be the first to say, i was totally against changing the course. I believe that even after Rita we could have left the course the same; but after the Corp came along and the island commissioner said we are likely to lose hole 12, I came to realize the inevevitable. Also, once you remove hole 12, you effect the whole back side of the course (especially during tournaments - which i enjoy seeing in PA). We could have just cut 14 in half and moved along, but that was too simplistic and really messed with the flow of the course from hole 11 to 13.
Trust me, I have played the island since '91 and helped set up the Ponderossa, Circle R, and Kisslepoo with Tom and John Houck- I understand the nostalgia about this course but still see no other option. It would have to be changed whether it be Fuzzy, you, or me -decisions would have to be made and not everyone will be happy.
Please PM me with any concerns or ideas.

I'll see ya'll in the morning. I'll bring my basket for the missing one and like I said before, come tournament time, we can use one of my Strokesavers temporarily. I'd like to set up an elevated basket maybe for the hole that tees off near 12s cable and back in that nook of trees. I still would like to do that circle of bricks thing on a smaller scale maybe than at USDGC.

All the baskets are in. We still have to finish some tee boxes and signs because we ran out of daylight and energy. The ground at the island is a bitch to dig - rocks everywhere.
I want to give a big THANKS to Russell, Neal, Matt, Fuzzy, and Erik for their efforts out there :!: Thanks to John for the concrete cylinders which mark the tee boxes. We worked for about 7 hours out at the course on this project! To all of the people who enjoy playing the island and had the opportunity to come out and help but didn't, you can KISS MY ASS :-x
We are going to try to play the course today around 12:30 and work out some of the soreness in our backs and arms

Roy..... I know this doesnt aplly to all.... But some of us have to work on weekdays.. I thought i was getting the day off yesterday but i ended up having to work. So to lump everyone that didnt come out to help into the Kiss My Ass category was alittle HARSH..... But i understand where you are coming from...
Happy New Year!

Like you said, it doesn't apply to all. If you had to work no big deal - work and family (for dg) come first and you didn't have the opportunity. I just thought there would be more than 5 people -hell, Erik doesn't even live here and he was one of the hardest workers (being young probably helped too). Also, i'm being a whiny little girl this morning because i realized what a paper-pushing/computer bitch I am
Happy New Year to you too! 2005 Sucked!

I know what you mean about getting workers... We have close to 200 members in our Mardi Gras krewe and we are trying to get the 5 floats up to shape and looking good... and we can only get 7 people tops to come out and help.......

I bet there will be many that will want to ride on the float even though they couldn't find the time to help build it!

Yeah, Like everyone...
The City of Port Arthur has already scheduled cavOILcade so they have no reason not to do the same for Mardi Gras.
