Today I announced some pretty exciting news at the League Players party.

What started out with an email and a phone call in August 2003, almost four years later has finally become reality. The Orange County Parks Department has recently purchased 18 Innova DISCatcher® Pro disc golf targets. These will be used to completely renovate the disc golf course in the park.

The project will be done in two phases. The first phase will be installing a temporary/permanent nine hole course in the same area that the current course is located in the park. The second phase will involve clearing some land in the woods either by reclaiming acres of clearing underbrush, or by clearing out throwing lanes for the holes.

Right now in the first phase, we are in the design step of the project to determine the safest location for the nine holes to be installed. The existing course has some decent holes but with the way discs are made with the sharp edges, having a tee area 20 feet from the previous target just isn't the safest thing. Some things will be changing, we are going to try to keep some of the existing holes though because there are some nice ones.

I will be setting up a work day for the park and posting it here on GTDiscGolf.com in the coming weeks. I would like to take the time to thank the Orange County Parks Department for making the commitment to disc golf and we look forward to working with them in the future.

-Tommy

Tommy Will and I walked the grounds and laid out the initial 9. There may be some changes made as the area is cleaned up and trimmed back but the basic layout is flagged and ready for approval by the park. It is a short course but has a longer hole on 8. I am excited about having another option for courses. Thanks again Tommy for your work over the last 4 yrs.

Until we get some of the stuff cleared out and a few small trees removed it will take some imagination to see exactly what we were thinking while playing out there. We lugged around my strokesaver portable and set up and played each hole though and it was pretty cool. A doubles team will go 9 under on a good day. On singles it may happen but will take a lot of work and things to bounce your way.

I met with the parks director today and got the design approval. She is going to check with the district attorney's office to see if there is any type of waiver that we will need to sign before performing any work using power tools etc. in case anyone gets hurt they can't sue Orange County.

After I hear back from her we will start clearing some of the underbrush and small trees / shrubs that we are needing to remove.

I will also be working with them to get the holes dug in the proper locations and we will have a work day to set the collars. We will be using sacks of concrete and mixing them up on site so that will take some man power.

I can get a gas powered cement mixer on wheels and we can drive from location to location and then use a wheel barrow for the holes we can't get all the way back to. Give me a couple days advance notice so I can secure it.

We are going to be allowed to bring our own power tools and don't have to sign a waiver to do the work. I'd like to go clean it up sometime this weekend what day/time would be good? On saturday my nephew is having a birthday party and sunday is father's day but i'm sure we can work around it. In any case, I want to get out there at or before 8am to start because it gets damn hot early.

This weekend is gonna be tough. I can be out there sat morning. I'll bring the machettes, axe, chainsaw and pole saw. Let me know if sat is ok, fathers day is gonna be a no go for me, but there are plenty of players who aren't Dads that could would should be able to work if you can get them out there.

I'll bring the machettes, axe, chainsaw and pole saw.

"Bring" is the operative word. Make a note not to let Jeff actually USE these implements...
